Change the server timezone under Debian

dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

Run that command and it will permanently change the timezone for the system.

The Q7 takes on the competition—and takes home first place

Mounting an EBS volume under Debian 6 ‘Squeeze’

Mounting an EBS volume under Debian 6 Squeeze is a bit different than under other Linux distributions because of the /dev structure in release 6. It is a pretty straight-forward process if you know what to look for.

Using the Elasticfox plugin for Firefox to create a new volume and attach it to a running EC2 instance. You’ll have an option to choose the device (i.e: /dev/sda1 etc…) when creating a new volume, in my case it was /dev/sdb

Now ssh into your instance and take a look at all the available partitions.

$> cat /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name

202 1 1048576 xvda1 202 3 917504 xvda3 202 240 209715200 xvdb

You don’t see the ‘/sdp’ partition any where but if you look closely, it is mounted as ‘xvdb’.

Now proceed as normal:

$> mkfs -t ext3 /dev/xvdb $> mkdir /mnt/ebs1 $> mount /dev/xvdb ebs1/ $> df -hk Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 1032088 843240 136420 87% / tmpfs 868680 8 868672 1% /lib/init/rw udev 848512 28 848484 1% /dev tmpfs 868680 4 868676 1% /dev/shm /dev/xvdb 206424760 191888 195747112 1% /mnt/ebs1

Audi Welcome Package

I got my welcome package last week, almost three months after I took delivery of my car. Included in the package is a welcome to the Audi family letter, the “24 Truths” booket, an Audi Club North Amercia registration form, a Q5 accessories catalog, an Audi Care booklet, an Audi Collection catalog and an Connection card.

fetch_feed not pulling updates in WordPress

One of the features we launched last week uses the popular fetch_feed() function to pull a RSS feed from FeedBurner. During the development this feature worked as expected but soon after going live we found it failed to get the updates from upstream in the timely manner. It turned out the default cache duration in WordPress is just too long, we needed a shorter time for feed refreshes. To set the life of the cached data, add the following lines to functions.php.

function hourly_feed() { return 3600; } add_filter( 'wp_feed_cache_transient_lifetime', 'hourly_feed');

What the above code does is to set the expiration of the cache to every hour.
